The Importance of Photo’s in News Stories.

The importance of photo‘s in news stories was something that was drilled into us in journalism school. A great, eye-catching photo draws the readers attention to your story. It also is an important component of the story-telling process as well. Consider the following –

Are any of these really the best photos for telling the story? I’ll assert that in a majority of instances, photo editors go out of their way to find the quintessential unflattering photo of the principal of the story to complement the author’s text.

And news outlets continue to be clueless as to the demise of their business.

What Passes for News.

What passes for news these days more often than not amazes me. I know I shouldn’t be so surprised at this fact, and yet I still am. Having graduated from Journalism School nearly 30 years ago, the

basics remain with me.

The local, now only daily local newspaper here in Denver, the Denver Post is our object in question. They have a story about illegal immigration and our current Senator Michael Bennet (D-CO). The other player in the story is former Colorado congressman Tom Tancredo.

Bennet has introduced an Immigration Compact signed by, “more than 400 Coloradians.” Now in a state with a population of 5,116,796, does this indicate a mandate or groundswell? The article by the Post goes on to fail to cite or link to either Bennet’s or Tancredo’s missives.

What the article does highlight is the infighting between the Bennet and Tancredo camps over this important state issue. So apparently infighting between a current and former congressional representative is more important than addressing the ongoing issue of illegal immigrants and immigration here in Colorado.

Colorado’s immigrant population (legal and illegal) grew 34 percent (127,000) from 2000 to 2010. Nationally the immigrant population grew 28 percent over the same period.
Of Colorado immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18), 24 percent live in poverty compared to 11 percent of natives and their children.

Of households headed by immigrants in Colorado, 37 percent used at least one major welfare program, primarily food assistance and Medicaid, compared to 16 percent of native-headed households.

33 percent of Colorado immigrants are in the country illegally. Illegal immigrants and their U.S.-born children (under 18) account for 4 percent of the state’s overall population, 11 percent those in poverty, 16 percent of the uninsured and 7 percent of the school age population.

We continue to have a illegal immigrant, immigration problem here in Colorado. Until our state representatives get a clear understanding of, “illegal immigrant,” we will continue to have an unresolved problem.

2 Days Later… Lib Media Still Carrying Obama’s Water & Pushing Romney Bully Story

This is responsible Journalism?

2 Days Later… Lib Media Still Carrying Obama’s Water & Pushing Romney Bully Story: “

Two days later… The liberal media is still pushing the debunked Romney bully story. Two days later the liberal media is still ignoring the Obama bully story. And, two days later the liberal media is still ignoring the wishes of a bereaved family.

Romney classmate’s family say the media story is ‘factually incorrect.’

Leanne Italie at the AP continued to report on the Romney bully story.

When Mitt Romney was a good-looking teen in the buttoned-up ’60s, corporal punishment was the norm and bullying had a different, more acceptable name: hijinks.

Yet in today’s zero-tolerance world when it comes to, well, just about everything, things haven’t changed all that much for young victims of bullies. Definitions have tightened, become law, but bullying is far from over.

‘Bullying’s never going to go away,’ said one crusader, ex-Marine James McGibney, a dad who founded a new social network,, where victims can find help. ‘What makes it a million times worse is the advent of the Internet.’

There was no Facebook, Twitter, YouTube or sexting when several fellow students at a posh Detroit-area prep school say 18-year-old Romney led a boy posse to hold down one among them perceived as different and snip off his bleached blond hair……

Let’s face it, the lamestream media would rather report on this crappy old story than the Obama economy.
They’ll do anything to assist this failed president. What a disgrace.

UPDATE: The Washington Post was forced to post a correction to their hit piece.
The Corner reported:

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story reported that White ‘has long been bothered’ by the Lauber incident. White later clarified in a subsequent interview that he has been disturbed by the incident since he learned of it several weeks ago from a former classmate, before being contacted by The Washington Post.

How Obama Uses False Media Narratives To Advance His Polices

If only the Main Stream Media would get back to their 5W’s and H, type of reporting.

How Obama Uses False Media Narratives To Advance His Polices: “

Last week we all got a great lesson in how the left promotes a lie to make Republicans the enemy and this time President Obama was a chief participant.

This is how the game is played: the left-leaning media establishment makes a claim about how rotten Republicans are and Obama then echoes the claim and presents it as the true state of Republican opposition to his policies. The result is that we have a partisan opinion foisted on the public as truth about how mean the GOP is to this poor, well-meaning president. A false media narrative is established by the partisan press, politician adds said meme to a policy speech, presto-chango, a political “fact” is born. But it’s all just a partisan hit job masquerading as fact.

We are talking, of course, about President Obama’s claim that the GOP is “licking their chops” over the bad news of high gas prices. This is the line uttered by the president in his most misleading energy speech delivered in Florida on February 23rd.

In that speech, President Obama claimed that Republicans were happy that gas prices were hurting Americans. Obama intended to show that Republicans didn’t care that America was hurting, happy they could use it as a political tool to hurt the president and his well-meaning policies.

Here is what he said:

“Some politicians, they see this as a political opportunity. I know you’re shocked by that. Last week the lead story in one newspaper said, ‘Gasoline prices are on the rise and Republicans are licking their chops.’ That’s a quote. That was the lead. Licking their chops. Only in politics do people root for bad news. Do they greet bad news so enthusiastically.”

Note how Obama uses the partisan slam, published in “one newspaper” written by a left-wing writer and presents this as fact about how Republicans feel about rising gas prices. Note that Obama didn’t quote any actual Republican saying rising gas prices is a good thing. He quoted one of his own follower’s partisan claims and then assigned that false narrative to his political enemies.

In your college debate class you’d call this a strawman argument. Using the claim of a partisan to represent the enemy’s position is what the rest of us usually call a lie.

This “one newspaper” from which Obama claims to quote is likely the left-leaning website Politico whose February 16th story begins with the line, “Gasoline prices are on the rise, and Republicans are licking their chops.”

It was Politico that said Republicans are “licking their chops,” not any Republicans.

Tellingly, not one of the reports in the news over the ensuing days tried to track down what “one newspaper” Obama was claiming to quote. It almost seems as if the rest of the Old Media assumed he was lying about the quote, but didn’t much care anyway because the slam on Republicans was too good to check.

Obama continued with his false narrative:

“You pay more, they’re licking their chops. And you can bet that since it’s an election year, they’re already dusting off their three-point plan for $2 gas. And I’ll save you the suspense. Step one is to drill and step two is to drill and then step three is to keep drilling. We heard the same line in 2007 when I was running for president. We hear the same thing every year. We’ve heard the same thing for 30 years. Well, the American people aren’t stupid. They know that’s not a plan, especially since we’re already drilling. That’s a bumper sticker, it’s not a strategy to solve our energy problem.”

Investor’s Business Daily called this a “whopper” of a speech and noted at least five areas that Obama simply didn’t tell America the whole truth.

In fact, the president has been one of the biggest cheerleaders for higher energy prices.

Over at Rat’s Blog, Michael notes that gasoline was at a low of $1.91 a gallon in some parts of the country when he took office, now gas it’s about $3.39 per gallon, he gives us a very useful list of Obama’s real energy policies, ideas that are tailor made to increase our gas prices and hurt America.

Some of Obama’s latest policies:

  • December 1, 2010 – Obama re-imposes and expands the moratorium on offshore energy production. Gas is $2.86 a gallon.
  • January 2, 2011 – TIME reports that the Obama Regime issued the first in a series of regulations designed to unilaterally impose a national energy tax. Gas is $3.05 a gallon.
  • May 5, 2011 – The Regime issues a formal statement opposing House-passed Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act (H.R. 1230), and Putting the Gulf of Mexico Back to Work Act (H.R. 1229) legislation designed to jumpstart American energy production, address rising gas prices, and help create new jobs. Gas is $3.96 a gallon.
  • June 21, 2011 – The Regime opposes the House-passed Jobs & Energy Permitting Act that would unlock an estimated 27 billion barrels of oil and 132 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Gas is $3.65 a gallon.
  • November 8, 2011 – The Regime releases a plan for a five-year moratorium on offshore energy production, placing “some of the most promising energy resources in the world off-limits,” according to the House Natural Resources Committee. Gas is $3.42 a gallon.
  • January 18, 2012 – Obama rejects the bipartisan Keystone XL pipeline and the more than 20,000 jobs that would come with it. Gas is $3.39 a gallon.

Michael has more to the list at his site.

Let us also not forget that Obama was earnestly attempting to make our electric prices “necessarily skyrocket” back in 2007 when he was running for president. This president has a long track record of trying to hurt America with higher energy prices.

The upshot of this whole speech is that Obama used the claims of liberals about what Republicans think, presented that false narrative as “fact,” then lambasted Republicans based on those false claims. On top of that he went on with his speech ignoring his own actions that contributed to the problem he is pretending he’ll solve, then presented policy ideas to “fix” the problem he arguably caused.

Yet, no one in the media points out this false line of attack. The Old Media merely reported it straight on as if it were all simply a fact-based policy speech instead of a screed full of calumnies and lies. But this is the way Obama carries on in every speech he makes. He makes false claims of his enemies then goes on as if the claims are fact.

When will the media call this president on his nonsense?

Left Wants SCOTUS Justice Thomas Recusal, Ignores Kagan’s Clear Conflicts

Those who support Obamacare are not capable of constructing a set of facts to support their reasoning on this issue, so they fall back on to tired and unsupportable arguments for their cause.

Left Wants SCOTUS Justice Thomas Recusal, Ignores Kagan’s Clear Conflicts: “

This past weekend the Washington Post published a hit piece on the grand opening of a museum in Georgia dedicated to the birthplace of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. The paper was desperate to make some grand conspiracy, some lawbreaking evil out of the project. But whatever is going on with the museum, this story was just one more shot orchestrated by the left aimed at forcing Justice Thomas to recuse himself from the upcoming hearings on whether or not Obamacare is Constitutional. Of course, this is all a smoke screen to hide the fact that it is really left-wing darling Justice Elana Kagan that should recuse herself from the case.

The Post story was a mishmash of innuendo, guesswork, and partisan claims, all amounting to much of nothing for proof of wrong doing. The Post even took the opportunity to use the word “whitewashed” when describing the color of the building housing the museum commemorating Justice Thomas’ birthplace. None too subtle, that.

There was plenty of other coverage of the opening of the museum that was positive, of course. Still it is apparent that the left hates Justice Thomas so much that they can’t even stand it that a small commemoration of his place of birth be created.

But real facts weren’t on the agenda for this article on Thomas. This article was meant as yet another slap at Thomas in order to mount pressure against him for the upcoming case against Obamacare. The left has been floating the demand that Justice Thomas recuse himself because his wife has worked as a “conservative activist and lobbyist, where she specifically agitated for the repeal of ‘Obamacare.’”

Contrary to the left’s new attack on Thomas, in America we do not hold the work of a spouse against someone. If we did that, half the members of Congress would have to be removed for the boards, or agencies, or organizations that their spouses work for. The pertinent fact is, though, that Justice Thomas himself was not the one working for any group that advocated for or against Obamacare.

This, however, is not true of another member of the Supreme Court. Justice Elana Kagan was actually involved in advising how to defend against challenges to Obamacare. If that isn’t directly relevant, what is?

Last week it was discovered that when Obamacare passed, Kagan sent euphoric emails to Harvard Professor Laurence Tribe who was then serving in the Department of Justice. This in itself should be enough to show that Kagan’s opinion on Obamacare has already been decided easily bringing into question her unbiased judgment on the case.

But that isn’t the only problem with Kagan’s serving as one of those that will have the final word on the constitutionality of Obamacare. She wasn’t simply elated that Obamacare passed. She was also part of the team that advised the Democrats on how to support Obamacare and keep it from being challenged.

You see, at the time, Kagan was Solicitor General at the time and was, “personally involved, even if only to a limited degree (though without a complete record, it’s difficult to know how limited), in advising how to defend against challenges to Obamacare.”

Yet, here we have the left attacking justice Thomas because his wife said she doesn’t like Obamacare and saying that is a basis to force him to recuse himself from the case while ignoring Kagan’s actual involvement in favor of Obamacare. Not too blatantly partisan, is it?

So, how is the Old Media reporting this story? A recent piece by Politico is a perfect example of how the left is minimizing the facts. The meme du jour is to report that there is, “No sign Elena Kagan, Clarence Thomas will recuse on health care law.”

Politico isn’t the only one. The Week did a similar piece juxtaposing calls for both Thomas and Kagan to step down as if the calls were equal in seriousness.

In other words, by linking the two calls for recusal as if they are coequal in import minimizes the call for either to recuse themselves. Readers will simply see the calls for recusal as a partisan maneuver and the more legitimate reason Kagan should step back from the Obamacare case will go unaddressed.

Further, the left also knows that the right is traditionally spineless in the face of criticism. They are banking on the fact that the right will cower — like it always does — and Thomas will remove himself from the case, even though there is no legitimate reason he should, while Kagan will never in a million years remove herself despite that there is good, legal reasons for her to do so. The left doesn’t care about propriety or legality when it comes to pushing its agenda, we all know.

The case for Kagan’s recusal, though, is quite serious, indeed. So serious that Eric Holder was called to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee where he said that Kagan was not involved in Obamacare. Holder’s testimony is questionable, though. Recently Republican leaders in the Senate sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder expressing their belief that Holder’s testimony about Kagan’s involvement in past Obamacare policy making was “belied by the facts.” Holder’s office has been stonewalling calls by the Senate that he provide it with documents regarding Kagan’s involvement in the healthcare law.

It is interesting to note that the Old Media knocked itself out to send reporter after reporter to Alaska to uncover dirt on 2008 GOP VP nominee Sarah Palin. Back then they wanted to uncover every single piece of dirt they could find. Yet in this case the Old Media is uninterested in discovering to what extent a sitting Justice of the Supreme Court had in a case that she will be tasked with adjudicating. Remember, a vice president has little real power, but the Old Media was losing its mind over Palin. On the other hand, a Supreme Court Judge has incredible power and the media are disinterested in finding out about this judge.

If this all doesn’t show the left-wing bias of the media, well, “you can’t handle the truth.”
