2016 Chevrolet Malibu, Hybrid, Review, Specs

We present you the next-generation Chevrolet
Malibu mid-size sedan.

Exterior

The redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Malibu sedan is (2.3”) longer,
sleeker, sportier and more elegant than ever. Its new look was
inspired by the latest Impala.

The front is equipped with the new horizontally oriented,
low-mounted headlamps, camo-covered bars spanning the width of
the vehicle, the split front grille that’s wider below the
bowtie emblem, the new taillights, front apron and the beltline
creases.

Major enhancements can be noticed at the back part as
well.  The rear window stretches almost to the trailing
edge of the trunk, the new taillight clusters are introduced,
the trunk lid is pointy and the bumper looks sportier.

It retains GM’s global Epsilon II platform.

Interior

For starters, by adding 3.6” in the wheelbase, Chevrolet added
extra 1.3” of legroom for rear-seat passengers.  The new
center console has a lot less knobs and buttons, since various
commands can now be accessed through the 7” color touchscreen.
An 8” screen comes with higher equipped models and as an option
on less expensive ones. The dashboard keeps the wrap-around
design, whereas the three-spoke steering wheel is equipped with
a new button layout. A dedicated storage slot for mobile phones
is added to the center console.

New perforated leather seats come as standard on the Premier
model and as optional for the LT and Hybrid trims.

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu also received a wide range of high
tech and safety features, the most significant of which is the
Teen Driver feature – a built-in system that allows parents to
view how their teenager child drove the car, by tracking car
data.

Engine and performance

The new Malibu’s previous 2.5-liter engine which delivered
197 hp and 191 pound-feet of torque is replaced with a new
entry-level engine: a turbocharged 1.5-liter, 4-cylinder
producing 160 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque. The new engine
is less powerful, however it is more fuel efficient (27 mpg
city and 37 mpg highway). The engine is paired up with a
6-speed automatic transmission. New Chevy Malibu with this
engine accelerates 0-60 mph in 7.8 seconds, while top speed is
about 130 mph.

When it comes to the higher trims, they use the 2.0-liter
turbo-4 (still less power, with slightly better fuel economy)
mated to an 8-speed automatic instead of a 6-speed. It delivers
250 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque.

The 2016 Chevy Malibu regained a hybrid drivetrain after a 5
year period. It combines a pair of modified electric motors
borrowed from the Chevrolet Volt, a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder,
gasoline engine and a 1.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The
entire system sits at 182 hp and the estimated fuel economy is
47 mpg. Such a good result in fuel consumption reflected
on agility, so that the Malibu Hybrid accelerates 0-60 mph in
10 seconds, while top speed is about 125 mph.
