2016 BMW X1 Review

Exterior

The exterior of the 2016 BMW X1 features a sporty, evolutionary
design, with some parts borrowed from the BMW X3 and X5. The
front fascia is equipped with a bit bigger twin-kidney grille
and elongated headlights. The vehicle gets reworked fog lights
and air intakes, seemingly larger and aggressive than the ones
of its predecessors.

Although at first sight the X1 looks quite similar to its
siblings – the trademark beltline is in the same place, the
side skirt area is identically creased – it is actually
distinct from “the waist up”, with a taller glass area, raked
roofline and a larger quarter window.

The rear fascia has been upgraded to a great extent as well,
from the considerably larger and better looking tail lamps,
which look way better than the previous units, and a better
sculpted tailgate and upper bumper area.

The vehicle does not share its platform with BMW’s current
passenger cars. Instead, it turns to the front-wheel-drive
architecture that underpins the 2-series Active Tourer and Gran
Tourer. Dimensions of the new BMW X1 are 175.4 x 71.7 x
81.1 inches in length and with the wheelbase of 105.1 inches.

2016 BMW X1 2016 Interior

The interior of the 2016 BMW X1 can be said to have been
redesigned from scratch. Although the cabin is fresh and new,
it has kept some of the predecessor’s cues. The interior also
allows for much more luggage space (up to 15% with the folded
rear seats). The legroom has been enhanced by 1.5” in standard
specification and up to 2.6” with the optional adjustable rear
seat. The seats have also been raised by more than one inch in
the front and 2.5” in the rear.

The renewed dashboard now introduces a cleaner design, due to
the “floating” display and the smaller A/C vents. It’s split
into two horizontal halves by a vertical aluminum trim, thus
looking classier. The center stack is placed closer to the
infotainment screen allowing for increased storage space in the
center console.

The standard infotainment features include a 7-speaker audio
system, a multifunction, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and
cruise control. The standard seats are covered with cloth, but
customers can select a leather upholstery from the options
list. Other options include an 8.8-inch display, a 12-speaker
Harman Kardon sound system, a panoramic moon-roof etc.

Engine specs and performance

The BMW X1 2016 will be available with several engine
options in all markets except in the U.S., where it will be
limited to one engine option only. The U.S. X1 will come in
all-wheel drive.

Engine will be a twin-turbo 2.0-liter 4-cylinder delivering 228
horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, which is 12 horsepower
less than its predecessor. But it still remains the fastest
vehicle in its segment with acceleration 0-60 mph in 6.3
seconds. The new X1 2016 is able to reach the top speed of 130
mph, but it can be optionally raised to 143 mph. The engine is
coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel
consumption, according to the BMW is quite reduced and X1
is “significantly more efficient” than its predecessor, so that
the estimated below 23 mpg in city and 34 mpg on the highway,
27 mpg combined.

Price and release date

Although switching from RWD to FWD will reduce the X1’s
production costs, it won’t make the vehicle any cheaper.
However, it will bring much more profit to the company. In a
nutshell, BMW pricing should start at $33,000, release
date is foreseen for December 2015.
